dark roasted blend has a great post with some amazing photos of artwork by jim denevan and his incredible and beautiful large scale sand drawings. seriously very beautiful. and seriously very large! the artwork seen below is three miles across and took 100 miles of walking to draw the pattern. a massive undertaking that would only be temporary. i love it! i posted some of the photos below, but be sure to check out the post on dark roasted blend for more amazing pics.

wow. amazing. incredible. i am clearly not using my brain enough or i have devoted too much of it to remembering movie lines from star wars (actually, both are true). stephen wiltshire is an amazing individual and accomplished artist. he is also autistic and in the world of savants, he known as the human camera. his first words, spoken at the age of 5, were ‘pencil and paper.’ watch this clip of stephen wiltshire drawing the city of Rome, Italy from memory. just from memory and after only having seen Rome from a 45 minute helicopter ride. drawn in 3 days as a panorama on over 5 yards of paper. accurate down to the windows. fascinating. what a gift! here’s an additional clip of stephen wiltshire drawing the city of tokyo just from memory (clip of drawing rome embedded below).
someone has gone to a lot of trouble to document a lot of cool illustrations all in one place. please visit the wonderful blog bibliodyssey when you get a chance. take your time. lots to see. i found bibliodyssey via a boing-boing post about surrealist illustrations done by françois desprez for the book Gargantua and Pantagruel. here are two must see posts: pantragruel I and pantragruel II. lovely & freaky illustrations! also, check out the post figuratively speaking. it has an outside link to the digital collections from the library of congress on the rare book Bizzarie Di Varie Figure. so great! the post on arthur rackham is also nice. it just keeps going! bibliodyssy is a gold mine!
peep the great illustrators and illustration at illustration mundo. i also like their random array of 100 things. for all you talented illustratin’ and drawin’ types, you can register for free on their site and show your art off, let them know when your site is updated, & stuff. very cool! (ps - ‘mundo’ means ‘world’ in spanish, yo.)
i am really liking the illustrations and art of marcos chin. very stylish. very feeling. very alive. the site is in frames, but the artwork more than makes up for it. you may have seen one or two of his ads for lavalife. his personal work is great too! for more images and info, check out the great interview with marcos chin on ventilate.
