the cardboard institute of technology presents welcome to cardburg. welcome indeed! cardburg is an amazing art installation going on at cellspace in san francisco. an entire city - built all in cardboard - with magic, myth, and lore all its own. amazing! and you should see it! opening night was April 3rd, 2008. There’s another opening/show tonight, April 10th at 7pm, and a final show next week on friday April 18th at 8pm. you can read the hype on sfgate or read the great post on extreme craft (& flickr set too!) but go! good art can be hard to find (but actually, in SF, not lately. lotsa goodness out there!). is SF ready for a ducksquatch? yes!

sort of like the obey giant obama hope poster but with a bit more style & punch, numlok has created some rad hilary nope posters which are viewable & printable from his flickr account. good stuff numlok!
if you like to browse websites with lots of interesting eye candy, then i recommend yanko design. it’s a great design blog that showcases cutting edge design ranging from concepts, products, gadgets, interior spaces, industrial design, branding, tools, toys, everyday items, and more. it’s very advertisement heavy, but still very much worth a visit.

check out these beautiful glass art pieces created by dylan kehde roelofs consisting of hand-blown incandescent light bulbs sculptures. very lovely!
the 2010 winter olympics in vancouver canada will have a rad sasquatch mascot named quatchi. this pleases me. the use of quatchi as a mascot will hopefully send a signal to all sasquatches, yowies, yetis, bigfoots, and skunk-apes to stop leaving giant footprints and just come out of hiding. or it will bring a massive lawsuit filed on behalf of all sasquatches for illegal appropriation of celebrity likeness. awesome mascot design by meomi design. quatchi mascot info via the very funny blogfoot (thanks blogfoot!).
for those of you who have embarked or are embarking into the magical world of raising a baby, giantmonster salutes you. and we would like to help by pointing you in the direction of some very handy parenting flash cards. from c00lstuff.com comes the awesome do’s and don’ts with babies. print them out and paste them all over your house for quick reference. some of the guidelines are posted below. enjoy & happy parenting!

i am very much enjoying the illustrations created by artist christoph niemann. very clean, narrative, playful, and bold. you may recognize some of his work from the new yorker. f you have a moment, please check out his website.

i’ve been really enjoying the art of aaron jasinski. great illustrations, style, scenes, and colors. his website has a great interface too, but you will find his gallery on deviantART easier to peruse. thank you aaron for your work!

i’m very happy to see the beautiful paintings and illustrations of the talented bay area artist larissa martin online! please visit larissamartin.com when you get a moment. some really beautiful works in the paintings section (and in the watermedia & drawings sections as well). there is also a shoppe section showcasing her current original works available for purchase. very stylish website layout too.
posted up on flickr are photos from the 2007 maker faire that took place this weekend. wow - there was soo much to see! i barely scratched the surface of looking at all the cool stuff. luckily, scott beale over at laughing squid took a gigantic amount of photos at the maker faire too (link to laughing squid’s flickr set)! yes, i will definitely go next year and this time participate in the rad-ness!!
there is truth in advertising with a website that says ’stupid name, cool vectors.’ yes. i’m talking about vecteezy - a website of really cool & free vector art & styles. thank you vecteezy!
but wait, there’s also vecteezy’s not too distant cousin, a website named brusheezy. brusheezy features lots of cool (free too!) photoshop brushes. it’s a win win!
just for funsies (meaning: showing off) the enlarged creative craniums at cobra creative created these cool motion graphic spots. short & simple and really well done. one is called dig it! and one is called skull. very nice.

UPDATE:
wired has a great maker faire 2007 preview gallery to get you in the mood.

over at bobby seale’s official website, there is an archive featuring black panther newspaper cover art. archive spans the years 1969, 1970, and 1971 and contains 50 covers. found via the gem of a blog a best truth.
great article on sfgate by carol lloyd titled ‘small houses challenge our notions of need as well as minimum-size standards.’ it features a home built by jay shafer that’s only 96 square feet in size. brings up the idea of space and how much space one needs or thinks they need to live. you can see more of jay’s work and houses via his website called tumbleweed tiny house company. very cool!
gallery 1988 in san francsico is having an art show titled the indie: an art show celebrating alternative press artists. the indie art show opens april 21st, 2007 - which is also the same weekend as APE (the alternative press expo) in san francsico - and runs through to may 12th. the indie show features art by derek thompson, jerome ranft, sanjay patel, brandon bird, camilla d’errico, attaboy, and many others. looks to be a great show. here’s a map to gallery 1988. maybe i’ll see you there.
behold a plethora of great graphic design tips! check out the how-to instructions of photoshop methods and step by step tutorials listed on smashing magazine called web 2.0 tutorials round up. styles, effects, logos, badges, banners, patterns, backgrounds, swirly shit - a real nice list. just keep scrolling & you are bound to find something you like and/or want to know how to do. best way to learn is by copying & then improving. this list was inspired by a similar how-to round up over on leonardo’s blog.
here’s a great online tool for choosing colors, selecting a good color palette, and learning about color theory. check out colorjack. design radness! roll over a color swatch to see the associated color pallette. then click on the color swatch to get more detailed information like CMYK, RGB, or HSV values, html color numbers, and other great tools. thank you colorjack!

so there’s a party in your mouth … and everybody’s communist. rad graphic and t-shirt spotted on laughing squid. for sale at threadless t-shirts (selling like hot cakes). design by tom burns (now with poster for sale too!) too good!
it’s friday and i hope you have time to kill at work. for some really cute, simple, and highly enjoyable flash game fun, please visit orisinal, created by artist ferry halim. my friend jason tipped me off to this site a long while back. there’s a lot of really amazing and pleasing flash games to enjoy. so if you need to be on the internet a little longer today, please make sure to do so playing cranky crabs, chicken wings, bugs, metal armor, or any of the other rad choices.
if you’re always or even just periodically on the hunt for great new fonts, please go and visit dafont.com. lots and lots of free fonts to download. all with previews and all in both mac & pc format. great resource - thanks dafont!
i’ve been really digging the fantastic art and illustration of r.black. really great graphics, presentation, colors, line quality, and style. lots of dna lounge posters. i love the layout of all of his stuff. they just look so good. browse through his poster/flyer art gallery (and gallery 2 & gallery 3) as there’s so much to see. sexy, pin-up, comic book style illustrations that remind me of old pulp magazines and novels. thank you, r. black!
a quick note to let you know that the talented lil’ fella named rhode montijo mentioned on previous posts here has got some pretty cool new t-shirts up on his site. yes he does. you should check them out while you can ’cause i’m gonna buy them ALL!!! but, shhh - it’s a secret.
my savvy friend margaret sports a very cool looking handbag. turns out it’s a freitag bag, made from recycled large vinyl truck tarps used for truck siding, car seat belts, bicycle inner tubes, and used car airbags. the tarps are colorful as they have bright advertisements printed on them. and durable too as they have to withstand heavy wind, rain, and sun. freitag has a great bag cutter application (links to flash) for custom bags on their site too. their work seems to have inspired other designers to creatively recycle vinyl, instead of throwing it out or producing more new vinyl (vinyl/PVC is way baaad for the environment and considered a human carcinogen). the freitag site is built in using frames, but worth checking out.
it’s friday & maybe you’ve got some time to kill at work. or maybe you don’t, but would rather do something creative and explorative. look no further than the genius interactive worlds over at vectorpark. sooo good and lovely. there’s park, levers, and thomas to play around in (i’m still working on park). enjoy!
… now with grass! check out this grass lined wheel design project (also via spacing) done by four architecture students of the dalhousie school of architecture in halifax, nova scotia. the project wanted to comment on access to green spaces in an urban environment and the north american obsession with manicured lawns. to me this is a great take on our over emphasis on efficiency as applied to being outdoors (sort of like those popular indoor wave surf parks - experience the outdoors with all the safety of being indoors & none of the hassle of actually going outdoors). very cool. via treehugger.
golly. i tried to warn you that cobra creative would be unleashing their creative power onto the internet pretty soon. now it’s too late - behold the cobra creative site relaunch - crushing all with the power of a fantastic new website design and potent portfolio. and soon, more white hot artistic venom - cobrabrand.com. not many flash websites are built so well that they load as quick as the cobra creative site, contain so much content, and are bookmarkable (yes, it’s true). best designers i know. so why haven’t you hired them yet?
peep the great illustrators and illustration at illustration mundo. i also like their random array of 100 things. for all you talented illustratin’ and drawin’ types, you can register for free on their site and show your art off, let them know when your site is updated, & stuff. very cool! (ps - ‘mundo’ means ‘world’ in spanish, yo.)
i am really liking the illustrations and art of marcos chin. very stylish. very feeling. very alive. the site is in frames, but the artwork more than makes up for it. you may have seen one or two of his ads for lavalife. his personal work is great too! for more images and info, check out the great interview with marcos chin on ventilate.
