the mighty catbus that made its plush yellow furry debut at burning man 2001, making me and so many other folks very happy, seems to be up for sale for the low low price of $2,900 too! quoting the best craigslist catbus for sale post:
IM ONLY ASKING 2900 FOR THE CATBUS BECAUSE ITS REALLY FURRY AND SOMETIMES PEOPLE GET SICK ON IT.
so now you know. additional shot of pristine catbus from 2001 included below. more catbus pics via flickr too.
meet my new hero. his name is paul addis. tuesday morning at 2:45am-ish he set the burning man effigy on fire (4 days before the scheduled burn) and was arrested and charged with arson. gotta love the irony! and great mugshot picture too! i think it’s officially time to form a new festival of radical self-expression. extensive coverage over at laughing squid. you can contribute to paul’s bail money fund over at freepauladdis.com. i picked a hell of a year to skip out.
tickets for the 2007 burning man festival go on sale tomorrow - wednesday, january 17th, 2007 - at 10am. starting price for tickets is at a hefty $195 each, followed by a second tier at $225 each, and a third tier at $250 each. this years burning man theme is the green man, which seems to focus on humanity’s relationship to nature as well as put a green, eco-friendly face (and also marketing spin, depending on how you look at it) on the event. gotta love the irony. one move to make burning man ‘green’ and also appeal to current and new environmentally conscious ticket buyers comes from coolingman - a project aimed at offsetting greenhouse gases for the festival’s activities. more info and links on going carbon neutral can be found on wikipedia. personally i look at this type of carbon trading as a way of allowing groups and individuals to continue with their current rate of consumption without any actual reduction in activities that cause pollution. it’s a bit like conservation through consumerism, where greater luxuries, consumption, and pollution can be rationalized and permitted by simply throwing money at it’s ecological impact through buying carbon credits. it’s convenient like a credit card, but it doesn’t raise eco-consciousness. anyway, what was i talking about? oh yeah, that big eco-fest party in the desert - burning man.
halloween is coming! yay! best time of the year. for your trick and/or treating delights, giantmonster recommends what looks to be another great party put on by opel. yes, it’s the night of the living party taking place on october 28th at mighty in SF. very excited to see on the dj lineup bassnectar, a.k.a. lorin, who was out-of-this-world amazing at burning man this year. yes! seems to be plenty of time to make my half-man/half-ant costume (MANT!) so i’ll see you there!
hey, are you a martini lover? well, if yes, then maybe not for long. this photo snapped by my friend matt captures a fairly perfect burning man moment that can be summed up with ‘oh my!’ and ‘what the fuck?!’. yeeesshhh. presenting the very special teabag martini. awesome! thanks matt!
i had an amazing time at burning man this year. please peruse & browse the giantmonster burning man 2006 photos up on flickr now. despite while on the road to black rock city getting a text that my website went down (thanks ethos for the headsup!), my truck’s transmission dying way outside of sacramento, waiting 3+ hours to rent a minivan, and arriving much later than expected to the playa, i am fortunate and lucky. it was an absolutely great year! 2006 had the best evening weather i’ve experienced (yes, better than 2002), great music, and great art too! i really only wish i took more photos (i took much less than in previousyears). luckily there’s 538 incredible pics in the a burning man 2006 flickr set by !HabitForming to make up for it. and plentymore too. and much love to the tea temple crew this year!
UPDATE:
wanna see 200 lbs (roughly 90 kilograms) of gasoline exploding? yes? okay! then watch the clip below. i filmed the explosion footage on friday, september 1st, 2006 at burning man. the video has no sound, so please fill in with your own sound effects, if you please.
i posted a map of the burning man 2006 camp layout online & it’s now available. i re-drew the existing map (created by rod garrett) to help out with getting the lovely tea temple back on the playa this year. i added the street names as well as a compass. the map is also posted on the giantmonster burning man map archive. there are two formats availabe: PDF and JPG. feel free to download and use a you wish. interesting but useless fact: at burningman 2001, black rock city had eight concentric streets, nine in 2002, ten in 2003, eleven in 2004, nine in 2005, and again nine in 2006.
so i am currently playing a game online with 1000’s of other folks called crash the burning man ticket order website. dooodes - it’s sooo fun! started at noon & have been playing for an hour now. i’m at level 3 and should get to fight the big boss soon, right after “operation timed out while trying to contact burn.burningman.com” is over. sweeet! actually, this is kind of lame. get a better server dammit!
