the hello experiment

the hello experiment
is it me you’re looking for? answer: yes. why wasn’t sculpture class like this when i was in school? to truly understand the magic of the video for Hello by lionel richie, one must become the video for Hello by lionel richie. hence, the hello experiment. the hello experiment seeks to capture the wonder, imagination, and beauty that is lionel richie’s massive jaw lovingly formed in wet brown clay by sightless, open hearted souls. awesome! it’s either a goofy and fun nostalgic paraody or a tragic spell created by demons to open a hell-mouth that will swallow us all. watch and see (note: please download the song Hello at your leisure so you can sculpt your very own lionel richie). thanks cobras!

bread tie research

HORG.com - bread tie species the brilliant minds at the Holotypic Occlupanid Research Group (HORG!) provide an excellent and free scientific resource for all to learn from: intensive study and classification of bread tie species. yes, bread ties. you’ve used them all your life, but do you really know them? HORG is here to help. HORG’s research covers bread tie taxonomy, life and habits, known species, and some mutations. from the HORG website:

Class Occlupania (Occlu=to close, pan= bread) are placed under the Kingdom Microsynthera, Phylum Plasticae. Occlupanids share phylum Plasticae with “45″ record holders, plastic juice covers, and other often ignored small plastic objects.

my brain is hurting from the influx of knowledge. i like that - thank you HORG! thank you.

jay shafer’s 96 square foot house

jay shafer’s tiny home great article on sfgate by carol lloyd titled ‘small houses challenge our notions of need as well as minimum-size standards.’ it features a home built by jay shafer that’s only 96 square feet in size. brings up the idea of space and how much space one needs or thinks they need to live. you can see more of jay’s work and houses via his website called tumbleweed tiny house company. very cool!

yoda retrospective from 1995

yoda - a retrospective
my friend fon over at foncocreative just posted pictures from yoda: a restrospective art show held way back in the day (1995 to be more accurate) at skellington productions. with some left over silicone on the james and the giant peach set and a yoda puppet nearby, the mighty yoda mold was created. born from that mold were dozens of plaster yodas that eventually transformed into elvis yoda, dr. zaius yoda, styrofoam yoda, piss yoda, and many others. thanks for posting the pics fon!

graffiti with lasers

graffiti research lab: laser graffiti the brilliant minds at graffiti research lab (GRL) have come up with another cool way to tag. going beyond their very simple & cool LED throwies (which have gone beyond simple), GRL has made what looks like a laser-tagging/writing system using high end projectors. the system projects laser light onto the sides of buildings in a repeated pattern which spells out words. in the picture, the phrase ‘free berd’ is a word play on the lynyrd skynyrd song and also applies to ‘free berdovsky’, an appeal for the arrest of the 27 year old artist behind the aqua team hunger force LED signs that gave boston reason to descend into madness.

note: about the GRL laser tagging system, it looks like the projectors GRL uses are the very pro yet pricey panasonic PT-D5600’s (please feel free to correct me on that - i recognized the projectors immediately from the pic). these projectors come in at around $6,500+ each. outfitted with a lens, that’s an additional $2,000+ per projector. that would make the complete 2 projector laser tagging system cost around $15,000+ each. the economics of graffiti are definitely changing. AV nerds are taking over! had to happen. link via boingboing.

drawing from memory

Stephen Wiltshire wow. amazing. incredible. i am clearly not using my brain enough or i have devoted too much of it to remembering movie lines from star wars (actually, both are true). stephen wiltshire is an amazing individual and accomplished artist. he is also autistic and in the world of savants, he known as the human camera. his first words, spoken at the age of 5, were ‘pencil and paper.’ watch this clip of stephen wiltshire drawing the city of Rome, Italy from memory. just from memory and after only having seen Rome from a 45 minute helicopter ride. drawn in 3 days as a panorama on over 5 yards of paper. accurate down to the windows. fascinating. what a gift! here’s an additional clip of stephen wiltshire drawing the city of tokyo just from memory (clip of drawing rome embedded below).

art of brandon bird

brandon bird
as valentines day approaches, you may be inclined to send someone a law and order valentine (here too). in that case, you’d be checking out some of the art of brandon bird. great paintings and illustrations with a lot of humor and style. me likey. where else is your mind going to catch a glimpse of abe lincoln (umm, whhat?) in a cage match, james woods’s last supper, video games with harrison ford, or bea arthur fighting velociraptors? thanks brandon!

aqua teen hair-larious

aqua teen prank how do you deal with a truly bullshit media circus? the same media that gives a cake walk to our political leaders on pretty much everything but gets irate when their own dumb dialouge and faux discussion format is spun back at them? simple: talk about hair. just hair. and take talking about hair seriously. very seriously. then watch the press get mad. brilliant. i love these guys! also, does this look like a bomb to you? then how about this? ‘dude, there’s a light-up LED thingy with a bit-map character flipping me off on the overpass … must be a terrorist bomb plot.’ are we that far gone? then we have become too paranoid. or is only the city of boston (or boston’s mayor) that lame? good photo gallery of the event. and a great video of the making of the LED signs on youtube too. the hair-raising press conference is below.

starlight meadows by jason king

starlight meadows by jason king some very intense, imaginative, disturbing, beautiful, and provocative photos can be seen in a project titled starlight meadows by jason king. briliant imagery and composition the images. starlight meadows was “designed as a story and a puzzle both for me and for anyone that interacts with it” (quoting jason king). the design of the site is really well done too. i also like the closing statement on the website: “Sometimes I wonder if I created the characters or if the characters were already here and I just gave them masks.” thanks tony for the link. via daily monkey and via neatorama.

superhero melvin beederman

superhero melvin beederman the third installment of melvin beederman, superhero book series is coming out october 31st. titled the grateful fred, this book has melvin struggling to find out who’s trying to destroy his favorite rock-and-roll band. the book is by greg trine and rhde montijo. my friend rhode, how does he do it? he creates and creates and creates. he just doesn’t stop. he’s like the terminator: a perfect killing machine, except he’s creating. it never ends! i fear all of rhode’s art & creating is cutting into his very important battlestar galactica watching time. there may need to be an intervention.
