with much sadness, i am writing a memorial post about my good and dear friend Mark Buck who died last week - thursday, october 16th - in a motorcycle accident. it is so hard to put anything into words that remotely says ‘goodbye’ to Mark because i would never want him to leave. I met Mark when I started working on the film ‘James and the Giant Peach.’ we quickly became close friends and i was lucky enough to work with him and hang out with him for the next 14 years. Mark Buck was an incredible man. an incredible and unique individual, incredibly gifted builder, incredible model maker, incredible gear head, incredible father & friend, and an incredible goof! oh man, was Mark a goof! if you were going to talk to Mark, you were going to get to laugh - that was just part of the equation that worked out in his quick witted head. Mark provided such an outlet for people who knew him personally and for anyone who worked with him for his ability to make people laugh. one of the qualities that i really loved about him was how he would laugh at his own jokes & punchlines, which seemed to make them funnier. Mark Buck, i miss you as do so many others. i love you Mark and wish i could get to say that to you one more time!
There is a memorial guestbook online for Mark Buck. it has been quite beautiful to read the posts and see the photos. Mark Buck’s official death notice has been posted on SFGate as well. my love goes out to his wonderful family - wife Mary Ann and young son Henry, and his mom Macy and sister Tomiko.
