the host

the host being a sucker for giant monster movies, i feel obliged to post about the upcoming south korean monster film called The Host (originally released as Gwoemul in 2006). i haven’t seen it. i know little about it. and yes, it could really suck (like previously mentioned films here have done). but seeing as it has a giant, mutated, catfish-like monster in it and this website is titled giantmonster, i must write something about it. The Host opens friday, march 9th. link to The Host trailer on apple’s website. link to the official The Host movie website (opens with trailer). movie & plot summary (spoiler alert!) via wikipedia. CG work done by weta studios and the orphanage. bad but very good monster movies are hard to find these days (last one for me was Slither) so i’m hoping to get my fix.

This is great, saw it at a special screening last summer when I first started working at the O, as they did all the visual effects. Seriously fun giantmonster movie, ESPECIALLY if you love catfish!

    MMM…. catfish…

i saw it on Saturday…monster movie matinee!

i wish i could say i loved t. there were lots of great moments in the film, but i think the effort to bridge COMEDY and HORROR was not so successful. i generally appreciate when a movie can shift in tone…but this was practically scizophrenic. really emotional scenes were undercut by practically slapstick antics…i thought that SHAUN of the DEAD straddled the two worlds better….

that said, i was still grateful for an honest to goodness old-fashioned monster movie! it was probably a bit too long, but there are really some great moments and i thought it was well shot…the creature was weird and broken and clumsy in a a cool, mutated way…the family was interesting and i appreciated the effort to make their relationships strong…

    if only…
