RIP classic spiderman

new spiderman? man, the folks at marvel comics are ruining a good thing. that good thing being spiderman. nerd out with me for a moment: as a kid, i used to really dig spiderman. i wore a spiderman costume for halloween 5 years in a row. i had the cheap web slinger toys that would break all the time. spidey was great! his character was more human and somehow accessible than other world or mutant superheroes/villans. now as if the character of spiderman hasn’t been fucked with enough, the good folks at marvel are giving the poochie from the simpsons treatment to spiderman. fancy new metal suit for starters. here’s a breakdown of what’s been going on in spidey’s comic (and, yes, fictional) world from an unnamed source of infinite comic book knowledge:

…in the last few months, spidey had his eyeball ripped out and devoured by a soul vampire, then he died, then he emerged and cocooned himself, then some ‘cannibal’ spiders showed up at the avenger’s HQ and devoured the husk of peter parker, then formed into an undulating spider ‘woman’, while peter woke up and sprouted wolverine claws out of his arms and then he chased the spider woman, who got away, even though peter’s eye grew back and he’s faster and stronger than ever, because he’s “emabraced” the spider, and then iron man made him a new costume!

there you go. if i had a category section titled ‘things that don’t matter but are lame anyway’ i’d file this there. oh well. RIP classic spidey!
